A small name plate

  1. I am in the process of designing a small I.C engine. I might not actually build it, it's just a bit of fun. I decided that the engine should have a name plate fixed to it and drew one up. The lettering is 5mm high and is extruded .5mm (half a mm) with 5 deg of draft. when I 3D printed it I realised that 5 deg of draft on lettering that small didn't mean much to an Ender 3, even on a fine setting, so I had to add draft to the lettering with epoxy putty. I cast it today usin ZL12, 88% zinc, 12% aluminium. I will make a few more to see if I can improve on the finish. And then, maybe, cast one in brass?

I am surprised it even worked!

One thing I have learned working with 3D printers for the foundry is to try and print things vertically when possible. It will help you draw the print lines out of the sand cleaner. I have to print sprues in excess of 20 inches and stand them straight up so the print lines run horizontally on the machine.
