I am looking at tools need and the price is high.
A sprue cutter aka plumbing pipe price is $30.00
    A riddle is $95.00

How do you to come by low cost tools

We typically make our own tools when we can.

Just make them Dave. Look for a piece of course screen from some scrap appliance to make you own riddle if you can find one. Or buy a piece of screen from McMaster with the wire and opening size you desire.

A sprue cutter is just a piece of thin walled tubing. Salvage a piece of copper pipe for free or buy a small section at the hardware store. Or you can buy a 1ft long piece of whatever size you want with your screen and have it delivered to your front door.

    Welcome!

For sprues, I normally just ram up a tapered dowel in the cope then pull it out once its all rammed up and struck off, instead of cutting sprues after ramming.

Kitchen sieves/sifters come in various sizes and meshes; try the dollar store or the thrift store first.

Once you start keeping an eye out for cheap everyday items that can be repurposed as foundry tools, you'll be surprised how often you will find stuff that comes in handy for molding and casting.
