Hallo folks, Tales of joy from the shed this weekend as (spoiler alert) I made a successful attempt at casting a sprocket hub using a silicate-bound core for the central bore. Here's the design for the pattern: The pattern is split in two and they are attached by a piece of M10 all-thread (not shown) that's stuck into the drag part: And the design for the core box: The core box as made: And my first ever sodium silicate core! The casting came out just fine - I had a few crumbly edges when I pulled the pattern, but nothing that affected performance: And here's the finished part doing its job: There's a video in case that's the kind of thing you're into. I took inspiration for the pouring cup, sprue and riser from olfoundryman's videos - props to him if he's here! ttfn, -- Olly
That is a surprisingly small runout, all things considered (such as no lathe or drill press). Quite a successful piece. Interesting way to gas a core too. Cool!
I probably just got lucky with the runout. In my mind the tapered ends on the core were aligning it perfectly with the print in the mould, but I'm sure the sand didn't get that memo!
Cocaine and single malt whiskey mix to make CO2?! Nobody told me this hobby was gonna be so expensive! Nice burninations, good job! Jeff
My own furnace, Balerion the Black Dread, also is named after a dragon. I know a little of Trogdor the Burninator, but really only by reputation. ie. Enough to recognize the name, but that is about it. Jeff
