A post today from Betsy. Doug has been injured from an explosion inside the hull while he was working. Looks like a small gas flash over.
He will be extremely lucky if he survives. Bleeding and blood clots in the brain, compressing the brain against the other side of the skull. Emergency surgery to remove part of the skull to relieve pressure on the brain. This is not good at all. The explosion was very significant, as you can see from the video; sort of a like hand grenade going off in an enclosed space. Bummer.......... Edit: This is why I don't run a furnace indoors. Be safe folks. No y-tube channel is worth dying for. .
I really hope Doug makes a full recovery, it's good that there was someone on site to call the ambulance. It looks like a classic oxy acetylene explosion, when I was in my early 20's I had a temporary job as a security guard for a medium size ship being converted to carry cement: below deck I found an oxy acetylene torch that the workman had turned off at the torch but left the hose pressurized and it was leaking gas. One of my biggest fears is getting injured while working alone at home: too many ways for an accident to happen. The first rule of Dunning Kruger Club: You do not know you are in Dunning Kruger Club.
So very sorry for his family. Having lost my brother in law to a brain aneurism just a couple years ago I'm afraid I am not very optimistic about his recovery....
I am no doctor, but the situations where I have seen them open the skull to relive pressure on the brain, it seems like the survival rate is dismal. I hope for the best for him, but acknowledge the reality of a head injury like that. I was looking forward to him launching that thing. I guess we will know in a day or two what will happen. I doubt he will remember anything about it, should he survive. Needless to say, I am moving the cutting torch rig to the shed that is farthest away from my house (today). Its a shame we have learn about hazards at such a cost. .
The plot thickens: Just heard from one person that this is a hoax. I would be pissed off if it were a hoax, but I would gladly take a hoax over an injury. Like some kind of soap opera. Anybody got the legit story on this? .
If you look at the porthole opening when the guy hands him the striker you can see the oxy acetylene lines running through the porthole so I'm assuming the bottles and regulators were outside. I can only assume he was having difficulty with the striker and left the gases on building up inside the hull. Or possibly he had the torches lit and mixture adjusted and something snuffed out the flame, then he went for the striker to relight the torch and well....
I would be glad if he were ok, but pissed if he jumped shark. If he has jumped shark, I will not be watching his videos again. As a matter of fact, if this is a hoax, then I think a number of people will go over there and beat him senseless with an acetylene hose, and I would help hold him down while it happened. If it is a hoax, I would think he is sort of toying with fraud, to drive up his ytube views and generate more income. My source seems to be confident that it was a setup, but we shall see I guess. .
From a friend of Doug's channel: I spent several hours trying to make this video this morning because I kept crying and having to start over. Maybe it makes me a pussy. Maybe it makes me something else. Im not quite sure. I got a phone call from someone I know and trust that stopped by Doug's place and spoke with Doug. Doug's fine. It's all a hoax for views or some other retarded f'ing scheme. While this video was uploading I got that call. xxxxxxxx and I already raised $400 on the GoFundMe account we setup. It will all be refunded fully. If you dont get 100% of what you donated back then contact me xxxxxxxxxx and I will personally refund it to you. im truely sorry for wasting your time. I had no idea that it was hoax. I feel so ashamed and stupid. .
