FYI, Just checked on your channel, clicking on part 1 or 2 from there still gives an 'unavailable' message. Shelled dogs are looking good! Jeff
Dewax done today. One of the dogs (jeffs piece of course, haha) suffered some hairline cracks on a few of the yellow sprues. hmmm.. SO I decided to paste slurry and sand over the cracks. Everything else also went for another swim just to be safe. The last thing I need is a liquid bronze fountain out in the driveway. Few hairline cracks Patch, redipped and more silica This is what all my wax work now looks like. I recovered this from the pan. It came out a sheet 2ft x 3ft and 3/16" thick. Enough to fill up my pot! I did video the dewax. Haven't seen it yet. Last weekend, I spent 8hrs editing just the shelling process and then managed to LOSE the .mlt file from shotcut! Last thing I want to see right now, is videos. Hey john, loan me some of your panty hose. ;-)
That sucks about losing the video! Videos are super time consuming to make, that's why I don't make too many or edit them highly. I've had the same happen with my shells before. Pasting an extra layer will help, but it may still crack and leak out with 1 coat. I'd do a 2nd one to be sure. I've had some hairy pours with 1 coat over a crack, springing leaks and nearly running out of metal while throwing sand and using my glove to plug the leaks. Not fun!!
I gave you my wife's last pair the last time you were at the house. I warned you that cross dressing would'nt lead to good things. You still mad at me for awarding you your trophy banner? My sides are still hurting from laughing so hard. All in a days work. Nice job on the shell, crap happens. Just have to deal with it and move on.
Nah... Cant really thicken the suspendaslurry without having the flour on hand. I'm just painting on more slurry and hit with sand. I'll take them all for 2 more dips to play it safe after the patch jobs dry. John in France said this is standard practice. Maybe he will chime in and save my bacon. Back to shotcut for now. ugggghhhhhh
https://forum.shotcut.org/t/retrieving-lost-files/1461 Guess it wasnt my fault after all.... I'm so accustomed to just take the blame for EVERYTHING.... (18yrs of marriage will do that to ya!)
Ive never used the suspendaslurry so cant say for sure but i used old slurry that is thicker than normal or use standard slurry thickened with silica flour, this is so the slurry isnt too runny that it flows into your casting surface causing defects. If i was really worried about it iwould mix in some fibreglass into a second coat and spread that on top. Im not in a position to see the cracks you are talking about but will have a look in a couple of hours. John
Can't wait to watch this! Just have to decide if I will wait until I get home and can watch it all in one shot, or whether I'll try to sneak it in during the workday in 10-15 minute increments from my vaping nook outside, across from the bar that keeps their free wifi turned on all day. Oh who am I kidding, I'll never be able to wait. In fact I have already watched the first 20 minutes... So how will you go about trying to sell that rose? I've only ever sold a couple of pieces, all to friends, thus all for friendly prices, never really tried to market anything so far... but I really like the idea of making my hobby fund itself. I figure to date I have paid for my oil furnace build and maybe half of the cart it sits on. Jeff
It would be nice if a hobby could pay for itself. My family owns a small jewelry store in south Florida that gets really good foot traffic during the winter months. Fingers crossed the pour comes out okay and I'll stick the rose and a frame up for sale and see what happens.
OK, now that you said that I remember you mentioning a jewelry store sometime before. Good connection to have for helping you move roses and jewelry boxes etc! Good luck with the pour. And the sales! Jeff
That's neat, come to think of it I remember you mentioned it a while back too. Do your family members cut jewelry stones at the store? I have no illusions that the hobby will ever pay for itself in full, but maybe I can help fund a piece or two of equipment here and there if I ever get around to finishing sculptures.
Just finished watching part 3, great stuff! Hope the dogs will get along ok with the cats in your kiln... Jeff
Sorry, no stone cutting... but they do everything else. I'm might pour tomorrow. Gotta see what time I wake up. lol
Poured 4 of the 6 shells today. Ran outta day light and the 2 dogs will have to wait. I managed to cook the crap outta my thermocouple wires after the first melt. I was in wild ass guess territory for temperature. DOH! I'm guessing this might explain why some of the bronze looked pink and silver after breaking outta the shell. No worries. When I cut off the sprues, the color underneath looked the same across the board. I am guessing after this stuff goes through the blast cabinet, the color will be the same. Everything filled perfectly with no porosity issues at all. The only thing I am seeing at the moment is a hairline crack on the light switch cover. Go figure.
I cant remember if funky colors are too hot or too cold. All this bronze is the same stuff, so that can't be what did it. Here's another shot of the full lot
