Interesting antique crucible tongs

    A friend came across this old set of forged crucible tongs in his travels.

    I thought the horizontal bar on one rein was an interesting feature. He asked if I thought it might be a lift assist point of some kind. I don't have any better ideas, but I said I'd ask around and see if any of you have seen a "handle" placed like that on a set a of liftout tongs before, and if so, how it was used.

    Looks like the right sized handles to match tong rains. If that's the case and they used a tong ring/tong clip to keep the tongs closed that extra handle could be helpful in controlling a pour especially if the crucible has a spout.
