Will It Cast?

    Alright foamies,
    1" foam, 10" diameter, 3 1/2" brackets

Do you think this will fill?
I'm torn between casting as is or adding connectors between the brackets.
    What do you think?

    Orientation for pouring.

There shouldn't be any reason why not. My only concern would be good sand compaction underneath the pattern in your planned orientation.

I'm not worried about compaction, there are no flat overhangs. Everything is angled downward.

I like the pouring orientation. Just vibe/pack well. I presume you will sprue into top of the disc. I wouldn't worry about connecting the brackets. Are you going to coat it? It's a relatively thick part by my standards and a lot of foam to evaporate in a small space. Could be an exciting pour! What is it?

Well, probably 500-600 pounds of granite. :)

Dont let the "pause" trick you into letting up on the pour too soon, and watch out for sand float with that big wide pattern. If those don't get you, you ought to be fine.

I was thinking it might be more than an A1o too.
I might have to re-size on thickness and size.
    Yes on coating.

It's time to mimic Kelly's pouring basin for this one.
Last foam pour I was wishing I had one.

1" is pretty thick compared to much of my lost foam stuff too... I'm guessing it's gonna have to take in metal pretty fast to keep the mold from caving in once the metal starts spreading out past the end of the sprue.

Yeah, I think a re-size is in order.

I think that would be helpful and get at least 6"-10" of sand on top of it if you can. I was thinking the same thing as Jeff when I said it could be exciting........lots of flame, smoke and challenge to keep it fed. A good basin/feed system and skinnying up the pattern where you think you can afford it and practical would help.

What'cha thinking of using for the basin? Bonded sand? I have a larger pour I'm planning and for a larger basin, I bought some 1/2" fiber board because it's the same material as the moldable stuff I use, then cut it and hold it together with a metal frame.

Since you have the pattern, might be with a go with what you have unless you can hollow it or if you think you'll pour short.

    Best,
    Kelly

I'm thinking I need to get the thickness down to 5/8". There's room to reduce the diameter to 9", maybe 8" by shrinking the brackets a little. Need to get it down to an A10 pour.
EPS is a possibility too since the finish doesn't matter. Have to check my stock pile and see what's available.
The pouring basin, SS bonded sand with a Satanite coating.

    Shrank it considerably.
    EPS, 11/16" thick, 8 3/4" diameter, 2 1/2" x 2 3/4" tabs.
A10 might take care of it.

I put the sprue on and coated it yesterday, hoping to pour today but the rains came.

  17. What are you coating it with?
