    Considering the existence of the Ursutz and its variations, it seems to me more likely that more area is (up to a point) better.

    This should be amenable to math: so much fuel per second needs so much O₂ (and therefore 5× as much atmospheric air); the combustion gases are so much at such temperature; and so leave so much burn volume for maximum effect.
