    Hello!
    New week new simulations.
Wanted to share with you this case study of ductile iron (EN 500-14 grade) cover. I most of grey iron castings most of the cases can be cast without risers and feeders than ductile iron is more prone to shrinkage. This grade even more compared to other ductile irons. We spent some time figuring that in case of initial gating design in some cases 2 of 4 feeders did not work properly and left a huge defect at the neck. You can see in video where the casting is filled through gate by side. This led to cold feeder and them solidifying too fast compared to others. This was solved by putting the sprue in the middle and letting all feeders to fill at the same time.

Also maybe not noticed in the simulation, we use chills between the feeders to direct the solidification towards the feeders. Without them this would not work. Also notice how well simulation predicts the piping at the top of the feeders compared to real world.

    Cheers!
