I think it would be helpful to have a list of common or even not so common terms, abbreviations along with a short definition or explanation of such. The list could be Admin controlled with recommendations from the forum. I read a post where "coping down" was mentioned but I can't find a definition or technique that explains the term. Fettling is another one that I 'm pretty sure I figured out through context clues but It would be nice to get to know the language. Just my two cents.. (2 hundreths of a dollar).
I think that's a good idea. Those of us that have been around here for a while tend to forget what it was like to be a newbie and throw around terms that not everybody would be familiar with. To all of the newbs and veterans that remember what it was like, if there are terms that confused you when you first started, post them here and maybe when we've got enough of them, we can organize them into a glossary.
There's a chapter covering that in Anon's tutorial ebook that would be a good start (it's got coping down but not fettling): http://forums.thehomefoundry.org/index.php?threads/foundry-tutorial.1487/#post-33861 The whole thread is very informative, but that particular post/chapter is a long list of metal casting terms defined. I guess if someone has the energy and enthusiasm to put together a glossary, they have my admiration. Being the lazy type, I would tend ot fall back on online glossaries already assembled. Here is one good one. http://www.atlasfdry.com/glossaryf.htm I just added it to the Links to Useful Info Subforum. Also, the US Navy Foundry manual available free online has a pretty good glossary and a whole lot of other useful information. Maybe a broader list of useful resources would be good. Then again, we already have a subforum of Links to Useful Information.... Denis
