    Western helps green strength...stronger molds...easier to draw complex shapes.. less sand wash due to velocity. Southern gives better hot strength...less hot cracking in mold and better surface finish...less sand wash in ingate due to heat. Depending on what you are doing they both have their own pros and cons so the best scenario is a mix of both. We are constantly looking for that magical blend that will eliminate all of our human errors and shortcomings.LOL

    The hotter the pour, the more hot-strength needed? As in Iron needs more hot-strength compared to Alumin(i)um?

    Yes...the hotter you are pouring the more hot strength you would need. I would think you could go from cast iron to aluminum with no issues but you might have issues going from aluminum to cast iron. It doesn't take much to help.
