It's very easy!!! Don't know why it took me so long to buy a rig. Best thing I've ever learned. yeah, the entry price was a bit steep, but worth every cent.
What should I be looking for in a tig? Prices range from a few hundred to a few thousand and it's not clear to me what parts of the specs are relevant?
Its been along time coming but eventually got around to the patina for this one. The hair is liver of sulphur applied hot followed by with ferric. The body is cold liver of sulphur dipped for a few seconds then rubbed back and repeated about half a dozen times to build up a slightly darker shade in the recesses. I didnt want it too dark and contrasty. The base was supposed to be pure white but there was slight contamination with cupric and it has a touch of green. Also the wax made the white turn more transluscent. But I liked it so I kept it. White was acheived by applying bismuth nitrate hot. The photos dont show the true colour due to the lighting. It actually looks slightly redder than the pics
Very nice work and nice to see you posting. That one was a while in the making but well worth the wait. Best, Kelly
It is a pleasure to see you back, Mantrid. I miss you when you are away. I've been away myself. I'm getting a bit old to trust myself with a #30 crucible full of molten bronze, after getting up every hour during the night to tend a burn-out kiln for five or six nights running. Richard
yes. I actually cast four, but two of them had too many defects and were not worth saving. But I did get two decent ones. A few holes in one that needed some welding. I patinated it similar but with a black base
Thanks its great to drop by and see so many of you still here and casting. If those investment casts are keeping you up all night Richard its time for ceramic shell . My casting skills have taken a turn for the worst so out of practice. I seemed to have forgotten so much. With this one I had a fiftypercent failure where as ten years ago they would have all come out pretty much ok. I have pretty much retired now so hopefully will be doing more stuff. Still got to get my coral and shark sculpture patinated. Thats the next job.
I haven't made anything recently. But I am planning to make some bronze lights this winter. And also an engagement ring Will post a new thread for you guys in a little bit. I like your new sculpture. The patina is really superb as usual. great pose too. Is jason around or busy with life? Did he ever finish that garage car lift he was doing?
