I started this thread on the other forum, but now that I've moved over here I'll post the end result here too. After almost a full year of working on this off and on, I finally finished my new kaowool furnace! If you want all the backstory and discussion, here's my original thread on AA: http://www.alloyavenue.com/vb/showthread.php?13774-Kaowool-Propane-Furnace-Build
I melted some Everdur bronze last night and that went really well. It took just 30 minutes to get to pouring temperature, and FIVE HOURS LATER it was still too hot to touch on the inside! It's unbelievable how well insulated it is. Nothing fancy, I just wanted to reduce the size of the large ingot I bought into something more manageable. I ended up burning the hell out of half my mold box though Did the color changes in the satanite and crucible seen in the video look normal to you guys?
Yeah, mine turned a little beige after a few heats as well. It also had the same colour changes during firing, see @9:20 here: I followed Fishbonz' lead and skipped letting each coat of Satanite dry before proceeding - just paint, fire, paint, fire, paint, fire, all in one afternoon. I know the manufacturer recommends letting each layer air dry before continuing, but so far it has held up great. Jeff
