    Do people here use commercial parting compound(s)? Is green sand different from Petrobond as far as what works best?

    I have read of or used the following

    1) chalk/calcium carbonate;
    2) talc/talcum powder;
    3) commercial parting dust - what the people I do foundry with use;
    4) "sill-sand," mentioned in Ammen's books...
    5) silica flour - (Silicosis, here I come!)

    Is graphite a possibility?

    I ran out of my usual baby talc (non perfumed) and had to nick some from the wife, my flasks now smell like a ponce’s boudoir;)

    we just discussed this
    diatomaceous earth pool filter powder
    and Graphite powder
    apply it with a muslin parts bag, wipe the graphite into the pattern with the bag, blow off the excess, the dust the DE powder with a bag, lumps will show on your finished casting

    Someone will give you a link to the oterh post I'm sure

    I just threw out 5kg of parting from Winters (Moving, long story) but I believe it was calcium carbonate and worked well with oil bonded sand. I have used regular scented talk in the past to good effect.
