I just discovered using a reptile red heat bulb in a cheap home depot fixture for softening wax. It works very well. Just a few seconds under the light and it gets soft without melting the surface like a flame would. Very interesting. I think the light penetrates the wax more deeply unlike flame which just heats the surface.

Yeah and you can get a tan while you're at it. I use a heat gun. David lemmon on YT has a plastic box that he just sticks a light bulb in it. Like ya said, warms the entire chunk and not just the surface like a flame. He does clay work, but same thing really.

Hmm, the heat gun I use is good for flame polishing the surface to a mirror finish but isn't good for warming.

Yeah I have a set like that too. But I find myself using the pin tool, pencil tool, knife and clay scooper 99% of the time. Nice to have a set of extra tools around though for those odd occasions when you need a weird shape tool.
