So I’m having and issue where after patinating my current clients piece, the weld line is visible through the patina. Wondering if anyone has had this and had a solution? Bear in mind that the colour isn’t what was wanted either so I have sanded it back already ready to go again. Just racking my brain as to why it’s done this and what steps to take next, so any advice would be really appreciated
I have very little patina experience but have read different alloys can react differently to patinas, ie., produce different colours. I believe some here have experimented with adding extra wax wire to their investment molds in order to cast weld filler rods that won't have such issues. Maybe if that is your problem, there's some other type of filler you could use that would match better. Not my wheelhouse though. Good luck! Jeff
Thanks for the reply yes see this is my issue. I have used C9 tig rods, which from my experience are the best matching rods for the metal I’m using, hence I’m struggling with why the line would be so prominent!
I weld my Everdur sculptures with oxy/acetylene. In order to achieve a perfect match, I use the identical alloy as a rod. I do what Jeff mentioned above: I usually pour a few welding rods when I pour a sculpture, and some bigger pieces to use to plug holes. A welding rod that matches the color of the bare metal, but is a different alloy, typically reacts differently to patina chemicals. Richard
Thanks for the reply, unfortunately I’m past the point of being able to do that now, I kind of need a solution to the difference in chemical between the two. I’ve not had it happen before, using same rods as previously. It’s a strange one!
