Anyone tried this before??

  1. Was cruising around on Amazon for some new filament and some replacement parts for my printer and came across this spool of what looks like it could possibly be "snake oil" but figured I'd ask everyone here with more time in casting before I made a final judgement.

I've not tried this before. But I know it's come up and someone here has used it. Not sure the results.

  4. Thanks Tops! I am still so new to this I'm still searching and researching the best ways to cast. I'm thinking of just going with printing out my models and just using petrobond to start out.

    You are welcome Darrow!
3D printed patterns and Petrobond is a nice starting point (the piece in my avatar was done that way) that removes the additional learning curve that comes with green sand.
Depending on the desired finish, you may want to paint/coat the patterns to lessen the effects from the layer lines.

  6. That's a great point! What do you recommend for it? I was thinking of possibly wax but not sure if that would be a viable option.

I have used various spray paints in the past, test on some scrap prints for compatibility. Lately I have been doing epoxy resin (2:1 or 4:1, not deep pour or casting) sometimes with a touch of color to make it easier to see. I can get a thicker coating in one shot with epoxy and it pools a bit in the corners creating a bit of a fillet. Occasionally I have seen paste wax mess with spray paint jobs on patterns, probably from not being fully dried/cured.

Another thing about 3D printing is that you can keep your CAD 1:1 and add a shrink percentage to the pattern before slicing it to send to the printer. If the cast object does not need to 'fit' then I will let it slide.
