Converting pool furnace to waste oil

I took on a new project just in time for spring. I am attempting to modify an old pool heater to burn waste oil instead of expensive propane, and looking for some advice.

I cast a new manifold to hold a siphon nozzle which will inject into the airflow right before it enters the furnace. However, when I pulled the original flame keeper I found a tight mesh cone connected to the blower, which is then inserted into another mesh holder.

I was ready to cut off both flame holders because I know I'll need the volume of the entire burn chamber. Furthermore, I suspect the oil will simply pool up on the mesh. But I'm just not sure how I should handle this.

Take a look at the following pictures of the flame holders and burn chamber, can you offer any suggestions to help make sure I get this right? Thanks!
