A most enjoyable movie. As a wood-worker, I am surprised that the blade is not mirror finished on both sides. Enjoy!
I'd been told it's common to ram green sand with the handle of a shovel, but that's a the first time I've seen it.
I got to see that video before on a wooden boat building forum, fun to see it again. The guy running the jolt/squeeze, with the shovel handle, seemed to have it down to the hammer blow what to do to get his molds made, very economical in his movements. It's a bit of sticker shock for me, looking at the prices for these new online...but can appreciate the work put into them after seeing the video. My two planes that I use most often (which is not all that much) are both garage sale/secondhand store finds with the blades re-sharpened on a surface grinder like shown in the video. I need to up my sharpening/honing/stropping skills. I thought I'd do more of this when working on wooden boats last summer but was too busy working on the boats, so I only cleaned up a couple chisels and maybe one plane blade. The salt air was a bit tough on the old tools. The maker space I belong to now has an array of sharpening stations, Tomek and others. I am hoping to schedule time with one of the instructors there to better learn this process.
