Pop quiz brainiacs.. Please look at the photo and tell me which group of wires do I connect the neutral.. Many thanks. I am wiring 220 single phase so use the top diagram.
This motor WAS wired single phase with a neutral. Someone wired it behind my back to run 3phase. Now I get the joy of converting it back. I have 2 hots, a neutral and a ground. The ground is through the case. I'm connecting into the three reds on the bottom. So 2 hots and a neutral.
I had it working fine last year on 220, but cant remember for the life of me how it was wired and the guy that screwed with it didn't bother to write it down or put it back the way he found it.
If I have 3 phase 220, I would have another wire right? As it stands, I only have 3 and a ground. I know normally I would have a phase converter, but we dont. wtf am I not seeing?
Typically a 3ph motor does not like to start on single phase especially if there is a load on it What's this motor going to run??
Words to live by. She works like a champ and spins the right direction. (got dumb lucky on that one) Thanks guys.
I'm of the understanding that there's no need for the neutral wire to be connected: if the motor is running properly there should be no current flow in the neutral anyway. I could be wrong but I don't think VFD's even have a neutral to connect.
Looks to me like your outlet is 3-phase. I am not aware of any 3-phase motor that would work plugged into a 1-phase outlet, no matter how you wire it. Three-phase motors do not use the neutral. And single-phase nominal 230v motors do not use the neutral either. The only motor that would use a neutral is a 120v motor.
I gotta say, first time I've ever seen a 3phase 220 hole in the wall. Wish I could have that in my friggen garage! Learn something new everyday.
